Them On Us: JH roll; Microsoft mountains

Jackson Hole, Wyo.-We are so freakin’ stoked, dreaming about the Steep-and-Deep, we could hardly sit still reading Brian E. Clark’s mouth-watering piece on his visit to ski camp in Jackson Hole. The San Diego Union-Tribune was home to the Clark’s powder diary as he waxed about the men and mountains that make JH the stuff of legend.
Clark let it spill that even Steep-and-Deep Camp instructor Forrest Sandberg “endo’d” in 10 inches of freshy. Sandberg claimed it was a “Jackson Roll.” Our favorite part was when “Jump” Sandberg told Clark he never wears a hat no matter the weather. “Don’t like ‘em, don’t need ‘em,” he told the journalist.
As if all the talk of double black runs, gnarly chutes and couloirs, and off-piste terrain wasn’t enough, Clark included some background on local fly guy Erik Roner. The former BYU soccer player doesn’t feel comfortable while attached to Earth, so he BASE jumps anywhere he can, and his skiing is done, mostly, in air.
Roner has bagged about 100 big air cliffs in the valley but his para-glider leap off Cajun Couloir in 2007 is the sickest thing we’ve ever witnessed. Dig the vid at TGR’s Web site.

The Wyoming Cowboy’s anemic offense may be in for a badly-needed overhaul. We first heard the scoop on KZ95’s morning sports report, that Missouri’s offensive coordinator Dave Christensen would become the Cowboys’ next head coach. The Tigers’ aggressive spread offense has been lighting up the Big 12 for eight years now. Coach Joe Glenn was dismissed last week.
•“It looks like a cookie. It doesn’t have any detail.”
“It,” is the Wyoming quarter dollar, and, in the words of Dwight Brockman, owner of The Coin Shop in Cheyenne, he thinks he knows why the two-bit piece has ranked so low with WalletPop.com bloggers. The popular AOL site for the money-minded asked its savvy readers to weigh in on their favorite ‘quarter back’ design and the bucking horse adorning Wyoming’s 25-center is currently ranked 9th least favorite.
The quarter may stand out due to its featureless design but Brockman called it boring.
The story made the Wyoming Tribune Eagle last weekend. Incidentally, Indiana’s quarter – with its Indy race car, map of the state, circle of stars and state motto: “Crossroads of America” – was rated the best by the readers as of last Friday.
•More on skiing: “You’ve conquered Banff. You’ve skied the slopes in Stowe. Maybe you’ve even tackled the Alps. But have you experienced the pleasures of booking a slumber party at Paul Allen’s Lodge in the Grand Tetons while sampling the powder near Jackson Hole?”
Peter Gianopulos’ story for the December issue of North Shore Magazine featured a scintillating inside look at the co-founder of Microsoft – Paul Allen. The Teton Ridge Ranch is an hour drive from Jackson on the western slope of the Tetons. Gianopulos summed up the experience perfectly: “[Y]ou can’t help but feel a sudden urge to throw your BlackBerry in the snow and go completely Jeremiah Johnson for the weekend.”
•It sounds like the job of a lifetime. We kicked ourselves for missing it, but freelance writer Nina Lary didn’t. The Woodstock, Ore. author answered an internet ad calling for someone to spend some time in Jackson Hole and write about it for the travel series Tourist Town Guides.
Lary said she spent about a month in Jackson, ‘researching’ for the book called Jackson Hole: A Comprehensive Guide to Jackson and the Grand Tetons. She did everything from paragliding to whitewater rafting to sampling the local restaurant fare. Tough assignment. “I’d love to go back,” Lary told Portand’s The Bee. PJH
