JACKSON HOLE, WY – The body of Candice Miller-Kwiatkowski, 36, was recovered from Jackson Lake on Monday night. Officials are still investigating the cause of death, but initial indications are death by a suicide drowning, according to a press release issued Tuesday by Grand Teton National Park.

At 7:15 p.m. on Monday, Signal Mountain Lodge employees noticed a single overturned rental kayak about 100 feet from the shore in the Signal Mountain Marina, the release stated. The unoccupied kayak contained a personal flotation device and a few personal items.

Employees visually searched the water and at 7:30 p.m. found Miller-Kwiatkowski nearly 30 feet away under 15 feet of water. Moments later three park rangers were at the scene.

One of those rangers dove from a boat and attempted to retrieve Miller-Kwiatkowski from the water but was unable to do so, park officials said. That ranger “returned and wrapped a rescue rope around Kwiatkowski, and the rangers, along with Signal Mountain employees, were able to pull her back to the surface and into the boat.”

The rangers came back to the shore with Miller-Kwiatkowski. She was pronounced dead at 7:52 p.m.

Miller-Kwiatkowski was a member of the popular Teton Valley, Idaho, group The Miller Sisters with her sister Karee. She also performed in the prominent local bands Bootleg Flyer and Mandatory Air.

The Wyoming Department of Health lists suicide as a leading cause of preventable death in the state and per-capita suicide rates in Wyoming are the highest in the nation.

Warning signs include talking about being a burden to others; increased use of alcohol or drugs; feeling isolated from friends, family or community; sleeping too much or too little; feelings of depression, rage or anxiety.
