Missing Person Search Underway in Yellowstone

[Update, 11 a.m. June 9] The search continues for Jeff Murphy. Yellowstone park officials are utilizing eight hiking teams, five dog teams, four horse teams, and a helicopter in their quest to locate the missing hiker.

JACKSON HOLE, WY – A missing person search for Jeff Murphy, 53, of Batavia, Illinois, was launched by Yellowstone Park officials today.

According to park staff, his last known location was the Rescue Creek trailhead, near Yellowstone’s north entrance, at 8 a.m. Wednesday, June 7. Murphy had planned to hike for the day to Turkey Pen Peak, which is about two and a half miles one way. After the missing hiker failed to check in with his wife, she called park officials Thursday morning who immediately initiated a search.

Public affairs officer Jonathan Shafer described the trail and conditions as “hard packed and hot out there.”

Officials are searching for Murphy on foot and by helicopter.
