Girl Still Gone, Boot Found

By on August 6, 2016

fauna1JACKSON HOLE, WYO – The search for missing teen Fauna Jackson continues into its second day. Search teams found a hiking boot in the area the teen went missing. It was confirmed to be Jackson’s but her friends say it is not one she was wearing when she went missing yesterday.

More than 115 individuals participated in the search efforts today. Search activities will be focused on the Bridger-Teton National Forest Saturday including the Shadow Mountain area and Toppings Lake Road. Ground crews, aerial flights, mounted and ATV patrols, and assistance from Wyoming Civil Air Patrol will continue Saturday.

Officials say they have not ruled out any scenario.

Additional resources were called in later in the day. By afternoon, authorities used an interagency helicopter, search dogs, and ground crews in an attempt to locate the teen. A Nixle alert was posted at 2:11 p.m.

Park spokesperson Diane Germann said it’s unclear what happened to Jackson, whether she got lost in the woods, had an encounter with an animal, fled, or was taken by someone.

The Wyoming Civil Air Patrol is planning to assist in the search tonight, using aerial patrols with aircraft equipped with forward looking infrared imaging (FLIR). The technology can detect heat sources emanating from the ground. Additional personnel will arrive ‪Friday morning to assist with the search.

Jackson is visiting Jackson Hole from Cincinnati, Ohio with a group called Groundwork USA. The organization does conservation work across the country. Some 20 members of the youth group have been working on projects in the park for the past week.
