Jackson Hole, Wyoming — Grab your tutu and get ready to run. The focus is fun at the Ultimate Towner Obstacle Course. But serious competitors are welcome too. In its fifth year, the Towner is a motivational athletic event celebrating community building and tackling challenges head-on.

But there’s more than just costumed obstacle course revelry. “The deeper purpose of the event is a celebration of personal triumph over our own obstacles in life,” explained event director Tim Walther. “We each have our unique stories of challenge. When we come together as a community, we have the opportunity to support each other in the difficulties we face on an individual level.”

Walther is the president of the event’s title sponsor, Grand Dynamics International, which specializes in building teams and training employees. He estimates 500 people of all ages will show up Sunday, May 15, ready to run four miles and navigate 25 obstacles along the way. Obstacles like “Over Under Through,” “Mud Crawl,” “Teton Traverse,” and the “Love Life Wall” present epic challenges and the chance to kick up the mud with your neighbors.

“I’m excited about the overall community engagement this year,” Walther said. “Teton Literacy had a six-week meeting for kids talking about obstacles in their lives. The art organization pARTners helped high school students paint our inspirational walls.”

The event is sponsored by approximately 30 local businesses. One featured business, The Village Gardner, is using Towner to build morale among their employees; staffers are working together to create obstacles and help set up the course.

The main event is Sunday, starting with a dynamic warm up at Phil Baux Park. But the fun starts tonight at 7 p.m. at the Center for the Arts when folks will gather for a flash mob rehearsal. Dubbed “Ultimate Elevation,” the warm-up will be led by Dancers’ Workshop to a special music mix by DJ Vert-One. Participants in tonight’s flash mob will learn the routine and can help get everyone going on Sunday. Meet at 7 p.m., Thursday (tonight) at Dancers’ Workshop, Studio 1.
