Hollywood-Hole exec passes

Alan Hirschfield’s passing made most of the Hollywood trades early this week. Variety, ABC News, and Deadline were among dozens of outlets to carry the news. The Hollywood Reporter already had it added to their list of “Notable Deaths of 2015” list by Monday morning.

Hirschfield, 79, made his fame as an entertainment executive who helped make epic movies of the 1970s like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Taxi Driver. He served as the chief executive of Columbia Pictures from 1973 to 1978 and was chairman of 20th Century Fox from 1982 to 1986.

We found little mention of Hirschfield’s adopted home: Wilson, WY. Deadline was one of the few places where Hirschfield’s short notice obit included any mention of ties to Jackson Hole.

For decades, Hirschfield collected notable artifacts and art tied to the Old West and Native Americans. He also served with a number of philanthropic and nonprofit organizations, including “Grand Teton Music Festival and the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole,” Deadline wrote.

NASCAR racer coming to JH

Stock car standout Kasey Kahne is headed our way, according to an interview he gave NASCAR Illustrated. The 34-year-old Hendrick Motorsports driver finished the 2014 season in fifth place in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Kahne told the racing site he plans to get away from the track during the short off-season by catching up with his beloved Seahawks, detoxing at home in Enumclaw, Washington, before making for Jackson Hole for a week of skiing, snowmobiling and shopping.

If Kahne skis and snowmachines anything like his day job, watch out for a blur of speed on the mountain.

Best 18 in Wyoming

Golf Digest recognized Snake River Sporting Club as the Best in State for its 2015-16 “America’s Greatest Courses” annual rankings to be published next month.

The Tom Weiskopf-designed championship golf course garnered rave reviews out of the box in 2007, a year after opening, when it was tapped as the No. 2 Best Private Course in the U.S. by Golf Digest. After falling fallow for five years, the club was resurrected last spring after a $5 million facelift.

“We are honored to be recognized as the number one golf course in Wyoming less than a year after reopening,” GM Jeff Heilbrun said.

WorldGolf.com carried the news.

Comet catching in JH

Comet Lovejoy (C/2014 Q2) is showing off for stargazers this month. With moonless nights in mid-January, Lovejoy is visible with a pair of binoculars, according to SpaceFellowship.com.

What brought intergalactic news close to home as it swept across Taurus the Bull on January 12 was the stellar snapshot taken from Jackson Hole by Mike Cavaroc.

Carter on Arbor

Mark Carter has just signed as a pro with Arbor Snowboards. The Jackson Hole resident will continue to ride and plans also on getting into product development.

“I couldn’t be more honored to join a company with such deep roots in snowboarding,” Carter told Kailee Bradstreet of Transworld Business, where we caught the story. “They stand alone with their story and their style. I’m excited to rip and create some amazing boards! It’s all about the ride.”

Carter said he will spend the upcoming season filming for the newest Teton Gravity Research project, which will be released this fall.

Oh no she didn’t!

We read an eye-catching statement in the Casper Journal from Councilwoman Robin Mundell. The City of Casper is trying to decide what to do with its version of a SPET tax. An Optional One Cent Sales Tax has raised $24 million above projections and council members are kicking around the idea of replacing the main lodge at Hogadon Ski Area.

Mundell said, “I haven’t seen what the plans were, but it seems to me it was kind of an extravagant looking kind of a lodge, and I was thinking, ‘Is there a way that it could be less than $6 million?’ That maybe would be a little bit more palatable. “I think we need to assess Hogadon, but do we need to be putting in a Cadillac maybe if a Chevy is going to do the same thing? We are not Jackson Hole.”

We’ll grant Mundell the benefit of the doubt. She may have been saying Casper has no business trying to compete with Jackson Hole in the ski industry. But it sounded an awful lot like she was saying we have garish tastes.
