These Granite Mountain Hotshots made some poor choices. I think everyone in Arizona appreciates the work they do but I wouldn’t set up a memorial in Jackson for a single one of ‘em. I was more upset when the 1,130 workers died in the collapse of a factory in Dhaka Bangladesh. Or the explosion at the West Fertilizer Company in West, Texas, on April 17 that killed 14 people and left 200 others with injuries including many first responders. Unlike our volunteers, but like many of our backcountry skiers, the hotshots seem to have an attitude that they can beat Mother Nature. They come across folks who see themselves as superheros with superpowers – that idea caught up with them.
